M + R reached out to me two weeks before their elopement. So we had a lot of work on our hands. With questionnaires, logistics, travel, and other planning ahead of us, we eventually got to this beautiful day unscathed and so ready to have fun.
We arrive at the Dry Lake Bed before sunset to pick the perfect spot for their ceremony. There’s other vehicles on the dry lake bed but with it being about 24 square miles, it’s a large enough space to share and still feel isolated. When M + R choose their spot, Favi and I turn on the bluetooth. The two begin the sweet task of grooming each other. M helps R with his tie as R gazes at M seemingly hypnotized by her face.
Their ceremony begins with paramotorists flying overhead. The dry lake bed is a popular spot for this.
M’s veil flies in the wind and the paramotorists photo bomb their ceremony but the two just can’t be bothered with anyone else. They’re here for this very specific moment and the world has disappeared.
The two share their story with us. Like so many of our couples, their lives bumped up against each other’s for so many years before it even approached the thought of love. They just happened to be staying in the same apartment complex years after they met after both of their marriages had ended. Their children were friends way before they got together. And even when they started to see love, they refused to acknowledge it. And today, they’re finally sealing the deal.
The two begin to exchange rings and R discovers the surprise that M left in the box, a tiny button that has followed them around and appears everywhere they go. Today it’s a perfect addition.
As the sun sets, we take in the colors from every angle. The sky goes from pink and purple to golden orange. And we take it all in before we decide to leave for Fremont Street.
What does a Vegas elopement reception look like, you might ask? Well, it’s walking around taking the sights, like Container Park’s giant fire breathing preying mantis and considering entering places called DiscoPussy. The two decide to check out Lucky Day, a Mezcal Bar. It has lots of really cool lights hanging from the ceiling and plenty of space for them to do their own thing. It’s even quiet enough for them to take a call from their daughter.
Before they end the night we take a stroll under the canopy, where they grab drinks and watch one of many free concerts happening simultaneously. At the end of the canopy we part ways saying goodbye to our new friends.
